HOME PORT FACILITIES

Portland Port is the ideal home port and headquarters for all marine related businesses. Given the easy access to the North Sea, Atlantic and Mediterranean and a comprehensive range of accommodation, Portland Port is the perfect solution for companies thinking of setting up or relocating to the south coast:

  • Global Marine Systems Limited in Portland
Global telecommunications is one of the world’s fastest growing market sectors. This is due in part to the demand for services such as the Internet, high speed data transfer, international video conferencing and mobile tele-communications. Global Marine Systems Limited is at the heart of this market, specialising in the installation and maintenance of undersea fibre optic telecommunications systems.

Global Marine Systems Limited has installed over half of the world’s submarine fibre optic cables that carry international telecommunications traffic around the globe at the speed of light. Portland is now playing an important role in this industry.

The company relocated its UK port operations to Portland in early 1998. Chief Executive, Dave Foot said: “Portland is ideally situated to give our vessels quick and easy access to both the Atlantic and North Sea. With our subsea maintenance and cable depot facilities based at Portland we are able to service the needs of our customers in the region more effectively”.

Global Marine Systems Limited have a new facility at Portland. Easier access to open sea was one of the key factors in the decision by the company to consolidate its depot activities on Portland.

  • Cable Storage & Maintenance Facilities
On a site covering four and a half acres, including two berths for visiting ships, Global Marine Systems Limited has purpose-built cable storage and maintenance facilities.

At any one time up to 3,000 km of fibre optic cable, weighing approximately 7,000 tonnes, will be stored at Portland. This cable is used for the maintenance and repair of submarine cable systems.

Global Marine Systems Limited owns and operates the world’s largest and most advanced fleet of cable ships and subsea vehicles.

Portland is home to two of the fleet; CS. Monarch, a purpose built cable maintenance ship, and C.S. Sovereign, a multi-role vessel undertaking both installation and maintenance projects.

Both of these ships are currently working on maintaining telecommunication systems in the North Sea and Atlantic.

Every day, millions of people throughout the world benefit from the cables laid by Global Marine Systems Limited.
