Portland Port
LIQUID CARGO HANDLING
All liquid cargo handling is performed by Portland Stevedoring Limited, (PSL) an associated company of Portland Port Limited.
The main facility operated is the Mere Tank Farm which consists of 18 mild
steel construction tanks having a total storage capacity of 120,000 cubic metres in air.
The Mere Tank Farm is connected via four separate pipelines, ranging from 8 inches to 12 inches in diameter, to all the main alongside berths at
Portland Port, which are less than two miles away. Each line is capable of loading or
discharging at a rate of up to 500 tonnes per hour. The Mere Tank Farm and the Main Port Area are equipped with loading and discharging facilities for road tanker vehicles. Each vehicle to the Mere Tank Farm is weighed in across a weighbridge and weighed out to record accurately to cargo loaded or discharged in each vehicle transaction. |
Operations at the Mere Tank Farm are monitored by an
on-line real time computer system which records tank contents, tank volumes and tonnage,
temperature and densities. The monitoring system is linked to PSL's Mere Tank Farm
Database, which produces accurate transaction summaries and additional records for a
monthly, weekly, daily, hourly, or 'on demand' basis by customer, vessel or product
record. As a future extension to the Mere Tank Farm there are four tanks each of 25,000 cubic metres capacity in air, buried in the hillside just above the port area. These tanks are linked in two sets of two tanks. Each set can be easily linked into the main pipeline system. |
