Situated on the south coast of England, Portland is the closest port to France west of Newhaven. It has exceptionally favourable access to deep water and is unconstrained by tide and weather.
excellent location to service South of England, South Wales, Midlands and London regions of UK. easy access to main shipping lanes and to U.K., Irish and Continental European Ports. good strategic location for passing Channel traffic, and for UK Transhipment to EC Ports. 2,000 acres of deep water within the Harbour Breakwaters providing water depths of up to 13 metres at alongside berths and anchorages of up to 15 metres water depth. Approx. 2,000 acres of deep water outside the Harbour breakwaters providing water depths up to 40 metres within the Harbour limits. only 2 metres tidal range at spring tides and good access in all weathers. well positioned to serve the South of England agricultural markets with minimum ship deviation and close to Continental transhipment ports.improving road connections. Connection from Dorchester to MS Taunton now fully upgraded. Weymouth-Dorchester relief road completion now programmed from 1999 after delay due to compulsory purchase order public inquiry, but dependent on road funding. Portland-Weymouth relief road number 4 on the County list and currently under planning inquiry.
