Portland Port
Dry Bulk and Break-Bulk Cargoes

Portland is well placed to serve its regional hinterland for agricultural dry bulks, particularly fertilisers, but also the smaller consignments of animal feed stuffs and grain exports, and it has the potential to develop various other dry bulk and bagged cargoes.

Fertilisers are the main initial bulk cargo for the Port and import operations are now commencing for both bagged and bulk fertilisers with 100,000 tonnes pa targeted. Smaller consignments of animal feeds are also being targeted as are grain exports.

A dedicated sand and aggregate terminal will become operational during mid 1999 and will handle sand and cement for regional distribution.

Portland is very suitable for the following break-bulk cargoes:

· Forest product imports e.g. paper, newsprint and timber parcels

· Fresh produce imports e.g. fruit and vegetables, mainly palletised and particularly from Iberia and Mediterranean, for UK wide distribution.

· Break-bulk steel and steel product imports, block stone and palletised goods including building materials.

· General cargo - agricultural machinery, project cargoes etc.

· Passenger and Cruise Liners.

· Ro-Ro Vessels

All these types of cargo require appropriate open areas, transit sheds or warehouse storage.

A 10,000 square metre area behind the Outer Coaling Pier and Deep Water Berth has been developed for cargo working and open storage. Further open and covered storage will be developed off the Coaling Pier as demand grows. Initial capacity is estimated at 200,00 tonnes pa with a potential for substantially more.
