PORTLAND PORT SUPPLIES ULTRA LOW SULPHUR DIESEL

7 December 2001

Portland Port have announced that Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel is now available at the Mere Tank Farm.

Stephen Davies, General Manager, said, “In a joint venture with CONOCO, home heating oil has been distributed from the Mere Tank Farm since September last year. The same facility can now provide Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel for delivery to garage forecourts, industry and business in the South West. The first load arrived by sea from CONOCO’s Immingham refinery in the 2,500 tonne, Danish-owned, Herning Shipping vessel LIEKE THERESA on 26th November and we anticipate further deliveries at about two monthly intervals, in order to achieve an annual throughput of some 30,000 tonnes.”

Rod Prouse, CONOCO’s Bulk Sales Manager, said:

“We are delighted with the success of our Portland storage and distribution centre. We first offered marine gas oil in 1997 and have provided kerosene heating oil to the regional market for more than a year. Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel was planned from the start and it now gives us a full product folio supplying local distributors. The Mere Tank Farm is very efficient and we are confident this new DERV capability will be greatly welcomed by our customers.”

One of the early loads to Dorset businesses was collected by road tanker from the Dorchester depot of Wiltshire-based Watson Petroleum. Tony Watson, the Managing Director, said:

“We have been waiting for Mere Tank Farm white diesel to come on line for some time. We already use the Portland facility for heating oil and red diesel and this will allow us to source our three standard products from the same location. We like the Mere Tank Farm. It is very responsive and flexible and is much closer to our customers in the South and West Dorset area than any comparable distribution centre which, in turn, saves us many tanker miles. This is not only beneficial to the environment but also allows us to offer our products at a competitive price.”

  Steve Davies added,

“This new capability is good news for Portland Port and good news for the South West Region. As a port, we are constantly seeking new lines of business. We cannot afford to depend on a single niche because, as the effect of the events of September 11th on tourism has shown, that renders you very vulnerable when the market changes, as it can do pretty quickly. We are pleased to be able to add ULSD to our growing portfolio of diverse activities  and we will continue in our efforts to attract additional products and services to Portland
